Fox Facts

There are several different species of Fox all over the world...the following information is for the most common species (the red fox).

Scientific Name: Vulpes vulpes (in Europe), Vulpes fulva (here).

What a male fox is called: Dog fox

What a female fox is called: Vixen

What a young fox is called: Kit or Cub

What does the fox's diet consist of: The red fox is an omnivore (meaning it eats both meat and vegetable matter). More specifically, the fox typically eats things such as small mammals (rodents), berries, human leftovers**, and anything else that the fox deems as edible.

When fox mating season is: Typically from around Christmas to Valentine's Day (however, mating season could begin as early as November and last as long as April.

How foxes mate: See the fox union stories for this (Rated PG-13)

How long a vixen is pregnant for: about 53 days or so (about 7 1/2 weeks)

How many young foxes are in each litter: average is 5-6 (about 50% survive past their first season.)

How long do foxes live for: Well, that depends, Most wild red foxes kick the bucket after just a few years. Captive red foxes may live long enough for a newborn child born right now to get his or her first TONGUE STUD!

Can you keep a fox as a pet: Well, it is possible...BUT I WOULD READ THE BELOW STATEMENT FIRST

SHOULD you keep a fox as a pet: In the immortal words of Homer Simpson after he saw the proposed designs for his car...no, no, no, no, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!

Why not?: Three major reasons, First, some foxes have rabies and if you are bitten and don't get medical attention, rabies can be fatal.*** Second, Foxes smell so bad that they make skunks smell like Chanel No. 5! And finally, I doubt that foxes would like being kooked up in a house for most of the day...they would much rather play.

**: if there are humans nearby.
***: if you ARE bitten by a fox, DO NOT TAKE ANY CHANCES!!! GO TO A DOCTOR AND GET RABIES AND TETANUS SHOTS A.S.A.P.!
